When the treating physician releases the employee, they'll assess the degree of impairment, if any, to the parts of the body involved or of the whole person. The doctor, in accordance with the American Medical Association's guidelines, will determine the impairment or the percentage of loss, or the loss of function to the whole person or the injured part of the body. 

If the treating physician determines that the injury is permanent in nature, the employee may be entitled to benefits for the disability resulting from the impairment. Translating the impairment rating to a disability rating is very difficult.
