IVC Filter Lawsuits

Inferior Vena cava filters help people recovering from accidents and surgeries by preventing potentially fatal lung clots. Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are small, cage-like devices that are inserted into the largest vein in the body to trap blood clots before they can travel to vital organs such as the lungs or heart, where they can cause life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately the devises are linked to a number of complications like vein and organ perforations, migration and breakage that can injure patients.

IVC Filters Can Cause Life-Threatening Complications

Introduced back in 1979, IVC filtration devices were inserted in more than 250,000 patients. While useful in many cases, these devices are not without significant risks.

IVC filters are linked with a number of complications, including:

  • Vein and organ perforation
  • Device migration
  • Detached device components (device embolization)

Symptoms of these complications include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Hypotention
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Neck pain
  • Hemorrhaging
  • Blood clots
  • Blockage of major blood vessels
  • Stroke

The majority of adverse events reported to the FDA involve device migration, in which the device is rendered useless and potentially dangerous.

IVC Filters are Being Left in the Body Too Long

Some IVC filters are permanent, while others are temporary and retrievable. Unfortunately, there have been many reports of temporary devices staying in the body much longer than what is medically necessary. Because these devices were not designed to remain in the body indefinitely, weakening and breakdown of the device may send metal shards throughout the body where they can cause severe damage to internal organs. There have also been reports of blood clots forming where the device has been implanted – the exact problem it was designed to prevent.

The following IVC filter devices have been shown to be most prone to failure:

  • Celect (Cook Medical)
  • Gunther Tulip (Cook Medical)
  • G2 Express (C.R. Bard)
  • G2 (C.R. Bard)
  • Recovery (C.R. Bard)

According to the FDA, the devices should be removed between the 29th and 54th day after implantation as soon as the risk of pulmonary embolism subsides. The longer they remain in the body, the more difficult they are to remove and the more likely they will cause a complication. In fact, a 2013 study by the Journal of the American Medical Association discovered that only 58 of the 679 retrievable IVC devices were removed, and that a total of 18.3 percent of attempts at removing the filters failed.

C.R. Bard was ordered to stop marketing and distribution of its IVC filtration devices by the FDA in July 2015. So far, IVC filters have been linked with at least 27 deaths and numerous injuries.
