The holidays are here, and many South Carolinians are preparing to hit the road for the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. According to ABC News 4, the number of people traveling this year is expected to slightly increase over last year:
- More than 660,000 South Carolina residents planning on traveling 50 miles or more away from home for the holiday weekend.
- Approximately 90 percent of those who will be traveling will be driving!
It is important to remember that with more traffic comes greater opportunity for accidents, including those caused by drunk drivers, fatigued drivers, distracted drivers, and drivers impatient to get to their destinations. Every year, tens of thousands of people are injured and killed in traffic accidents, many of which are entirely preventable. In the blink of an eye, an accident has the power to ruin your holiday.
George Sink, P.A. Injury Lawyers urges drivers to exercise caution on the road. Before leaving on your journey, make sure that your car is in good repair, including the condition of your tires and windshield wipers. Get enough sleep before you start to drive and take breaks as needed throughout the trip. Additionally, remember to drive within the posted speed limit. Speeding to reach your destination faster is not worth compromising the safety of you, your family, and your fellow drivers!
Before you leave for the weekend, it is helpful to check live traffic updates so that you know which areas are best to avoid. There are a number of resources available through local South Carolina news outlets to help you stay on top of traffic conditions.
