Despite winning a Top Safety Pick Award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Fiat 500 has been ranked the Most Dangerous Vehicle in 2013 by Insure.com, the leading resource of insurance information for consumers and car owners across the country.
While the Fiat 500 appeals to the pro-environmental and economic consumer with low fuel costs and space-saving design, it provides little protection for its passengers. According to a recent study from Insure.com, the Italian-imported compact car received the most expensive Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and MedPay rates for 2013. This means insurance companies believe it to be the most dangerous vehicle on the road, generating the highest medical costs related to auto accident injuries .
The Fiat 500 made it to the top of another list for 2013: Top Safety Picks as determined by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Surprisingly, the smart car performed very well in some crash test scenarios; however, due to its small size, it is still very susceptible to serious damage if it comes into contact with a larger vehicle or involved in a multi-vehicle accident. Even Russ Radar, spokesperson for the IIHS, advises against purchasing smaller cars like the Fiat: "Weight counts. Smaller, lighter cars are safer than they used to be, but...people riding in heavier vehicles get more protection in crashes."

If you are in the market for a new vehicle, make sure you take these safety ratings into consideration. Smaller cars like the Fiat 500 may not keep you or your passengers safe in the event of a serious car accident. The amount of money you save on gas or parking may not be enough to cover the medical expenses and other costs incurred after a collision with a larger vehicle.
