Nearly 200,000 Hyundai Elantra sedans are being recalled because of a defect with the passenger side airbag, according to news reports .
Hyundai Corp. said more than 190,000 Elantra sedans in the United States and Puerto Rico are affected by the recall. The recalled vehicles are from the model years 2007, 2008 and 2009, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The vehicles are being recalled to fix a defective airbag sensor that could fail if it is tampered with, which could occur if liquid spills in the center console, according to news reports. The sensor could deploy irrespective of the passenger's weight.
Along with the passenger airbag defect, nearly half of the recalled vehicles will also need repairs on the driver's side airbag, according to news reports. A defect in more than 96,000 of the recalled cars could cause the driver's side airbag to improperly deploy if the seat is set in a certain position. "The affected vehicles are of the model years 2007 and 2008 and were made from July 2006 to August 2007."
