While cell phones have been proven to cause distracted driving, groups are still urging lawmakers to stop banning them.
"A national safety group is urging states to stop making laws banning them. The Governors Highway Safety Association is telling 41 states, including Virginia, that there just isn't enough evidence right now that banning cell phones from behind the wheel is keeping you safe out on the roads," according to news reports .
As a Charleston car accident attorney , I urge drivers to never text and drive. While cell phones not always cause car accidents, it does increase the likelihood of getting into a collision, which is why many laws have tried to regulate cell phone use while driving.
Cell phone laws, however, may not be enough to dissuade teens from using their phones and causing a car accident. I urge parents to talk to their teenage drivers about distracted driving and cell phone use. I also urge all drivers to follow cell phone laws and avoid talking and texting on their phone whether your state has a law against it or not.
