In addition to fatal injuries, PHISIS reported that 33,535 residents of the county endured unintentional “non-fatal injuries” in 2010. These injuries include everything from falls to car accidents and everything in between.

The Amount of Car Accidents in Charleston County is Among the State’s Highest
Charleston County holds the dubious honor of ranking second in the state of South Carolina for the highest number of traffic collisions. With 338,652 registered motor vehicles in the county in 2017, it is understandable how so many collisions can and do occur. In fact, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (DPS) theorizes that the county’s large body of car accidents results from its hefty populations and large amounts of travel activity.
According to DPS, the county experienced 16,850 traffic collisions in 2017.
Of these collisions, 4,391 produced injuries to 6,418 Charleston County residents. DPS also reported that there were 66 fatal collisions in Charleston County, which is the second-highest amount of fatal collisions in the state during that year.
There were 12,393 property damage only (PDO) collisions in the county in 2017.
