In the event of an accident, there will probably be a lot of thoughts going through your head.  “Is anyone injured or hurt?” “Someone call the police!”  “We need to trade insurance information.”  In all of this excitement, some facts about the accident could be ignored or go unnoticed.  It is very important to try and take pictures of the accident scene so that all parties have information to talk about the accident from their own perspectives.

The purpose of taking photos is to have evidence to prove your position to insurance adjusters and the law.  A good amount of photos can provide information to make the legal process more streamlined and with less ambiguity.  This can help you get through the process easier and quicker.

When should I photograph?

You do not have to be an expert photographer to take pictures at the scene of an accident.  Instead, you are looking to document the evidence as soon as possible.  If you don’t have a camera with you during the accident, try to come back as soon as you can.  Any camera will do – don’t worry if you just have a cell phone camera or a disposable camera.  All of them can document the information you need.

What to photograph?

First, take pictures of any sort of damages done to your car and other properties.   Skid marks, tree branches, and other sorts of environmental aspects should also be photographed in order to demonstrate how the environment could have played a part.  Make sure you take a variety of photographs from different distances and angles – this shows different perspectives.
