Veterans Disability FAQ: How Much Does VA Disability Compensation Pay?

If you are a veteran who has experienced disease, illness, or disability from actions that occurred in or were aggravated by the active call of duty, you may be eligible to receive Veteran’s Disability compensation. This tax-free amount is given to Veterans for their time in the service and the hardship it may have caused them. The amount one can receive is determined by a few different factors. This should be read as more of an overview of Veterans Disability pay, as each case is individual and unique.

When the Injury Occurred – Veterans Benefits apply only to those who are injured or had injuries aggravated during active duty OR, in certain circumstances, during non-active training periods (this only includes injury, heart attack, or stroke according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs).

Degree of Injury – The amount of compensation is leveled with the degree of injury the Veteran faces. This can be measured in a variety of ways, depending on the impairment on the quality of life and ability to hold employment.

Family Status – If you have a spouse or dependents, your compensation can change. (Note, it is important to note change of marital and dependent status when it occurs).

Other Veterans Benefits – Veterans disability benefits can sometimes conflict with other compensation given to Veterans, which adjusts how much one would receive.

Veterans Disability Benefits have recently changed. As of December 1, 2013, there has been an increase in benefits that took effect in January of 2014.
