Luxury car, Toyota Lexus, is known for its high-tech gadgets, but one feature in its vehicle could be deadly.
Lexus’ keyless ignition system is being linked to multiple lawsuits claiming its link to multiple deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning. The keyless system allows the car to run quietly, leaving some drivers to forget to turn the vehicle off and leave it in the garage overnight where lethal levels of carbon monoxide can travel through their home. Multiple deaths have occurred in such incidents.
One lawsuit filed in New York accuses Toyota of failing to install a shut-off button in the Lexus that would turn off the engine if the car was unoccupied of untouched for an extended period of time, according to news reports .
“This is a cool little bell-and-whistle to sell cars, but they have to address problems that have sprouted up,” the lawyer said to New York Daily News. “It creates certain safety risks that did not exist with conventional key technology.”
As a North Charleston personal injury lawyer , I hope Toyota is able to fix the issue before any more deaths occur. Toyota has already recalled more than 10 million vehicles in the past year, but for issues including faulty pedals and accelerators that could stick and cause car accidents.
