SUVs are now statistically safer than they were in the past and riders and drivers in SUVs are more likely to survive a crash than those in cars, according to news reports .
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, driver death rates have decreased. One factor in the drop in fatalities is the widespread availability of electronic stability control systems (ESC), which reduce vehicle rollover rates, according to news reports.
“The rollover risk in SUVs used to outweigh their size/weight advantage, but that’s no longer the case, thanks to ESC,” the Institute’s senior vice president for research, said in a statement.
From 2005-98, the driver death rate for an SUV with a model year 2005-08 was 48 per 1 million registered vehicle years, according to news reports.
