South Carolina Drivers are amongst the deadliest in the country. South Carolina was found to have the highest rate of fatalities for drivers, with more highway deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled than any other state. Our car accidents can be deadly.
An annual report by CarInsuranceComparison.com using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has ranked South Carolina drivers as the third worst in the country. Citing roadway fatality statistics, the study looked at things like careless driving, speeding, drunk driving, and failure to obey that contribute to high rates of deadly accidents. The study, now in its fifth year, has ranked South Carolina among the nation’s top five worst states for four years.
According to CarInsuranceComparison.com’s analysis of the NHTSA’s 2014 data:
- South Carolina ranked first in the nation for vehicular fatality rate
- South Carolina ranked 34th in the nation for failure to obey traffic signals, wear seatbelts, or for driving with an invalid license
- South Carolina ranked 10th in the nation in drunken driving
- South Carolina ranked 7th for speeding and careless driving
In light of these findings, however, the spokeswomen for AAA Carolinas argues that South Carolina’s ranking has more to do with the state of South Carolina’s roads than the quality of its drivers. Because the state has so many rural roads, which are inherently riskier than urban roads, more accidents are likely to occur in proportion. In fact, in 2014, 82 percent of fatal accidents in South Carolina occurred on rural roads, while the national average was 51 percent. Furthermore, the poor condition of crumbling and badly maintained roads throughout the state is also a likely contributor to the accident rate.
