South Carolina cities did not rank among the most dangerous cities for walking in a new Transportation of America study.
The most dangerous cities were in Florida, with Orlando-Kissimmee, Tampa-St. Petersburg – Clearwater, Jacksonville and Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach ranking in the top 4.
Orlando had 3 pedestrian deaths per 100,000, had a 1.2 percent of pedestrians walking to work and a pedestrian danger index of 225.4.
South Carolina cities Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord ranked the 17th worst with 1.4 pedestrian deaths per 100,000, 1.4 percent of pedestrians walking to work and a 99.6 danger index.
“Researchers used 10 years of pedestrian fatality data and census figures to make their calculations relative to the amount of walking in a given area. Using that scale, New York City-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, home to the highest number of people who walk to work, is considered one of the safest cities for pedestrians,” according to news reports .
Boston-Cambridge-Quincy ranked 52, making it the least dangerous for pedestrians.
