State troopers are urging drivers to South Carolina drivers to stay off the roads, following a snow storm that left 2 to 5 inches of snow on the ground Monday morning.
By 9:30 a.m., more than 240 traffic accidents were reported in the Midlands, according to news reports.
“The roads are bad. We’re asking people to stay home. It’s only going to get worse,” said Lnc. Cpl Josef Robinson, who reported more than 100 traffic accidents in the Columbia area by 9 a.m.
Drivers are being warned to especially avoid hilly roadways and several city streets where drivers have already crashed, including “Gervais Street near Harden Street, where cars had difficulty going up a hill, and I-126, where it meets Huger and Elmwood streets near Broad River. Police were diverting traffic away from that section of Gervais Street.”
As a North Charleston car accident attorney, , I expect more accidents to occur as snow and sleet is expected to last until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Although the South Carolina Department of Transportation is salting the roadways, they can still be dangerous. I urge drivers to practice safe driving habits and be cautious while driving on icy roads. Cars can easily loose traction when vehicles are in the process of speeding up. I urge drivers to slow down, especially in shady areas where ice may still be on the road, allow ample time to break and use traction tires or chains when necessary.
