The South Carolina Department of Transportation is urging drivers to stay off the roads during the snow storm because they are simply too dangerous to drive on.
“With this type of weather, there’s no reason to take a chance on the roadways,” said interim Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott to news reports.
The heavy snowfall Monday morning made some roads impassable, even those in downtown Columbia.
The Department of Transportation has had to set up barriers to block drivers from traveling down some downtown streets that are too dangerous.
“If we have roads that are passable, we are going to open them,” said Scott to news reports. “If we have roads that are getting repeated forms of skidding or people can’t pass and they’re piling up, we are going to shut the roads down just or the safety of the citizens.”
Conditions are expected to stay poor until mid-week. “The conditions are bad, but they’re only going to deteriorate from here,” he said to news reports.
