Seemingly healthy spinach may be not-so-good for you, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration who found Salmonella bacteria in one brand of bagged spinach.
Random sampling by the FDA found Salmonella bacteria in some Fresh Express bagged, pre-washed spinach. Fresh Express said it is recalling nearly 2,939 cases of the spinach after discovering the potential contamination.
The recalled product includes:
- Fresh Express 9-ounce bagged spinach with product codes starting with H081 and H082, UPC codes of 7127913204 and use-by dates of April 6 and 7.
“Consumers can find the product code and use-by date in the upper right-hand corner of the package and the UPC code in the lower left on the reverse side of the package,” according to news reports. “The affected cases were distributed in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Ohio and Maine, with possible redistribution in New Jersey, Virginia, Delaware, Vermont, New Hampshire, West Virginia and Washington, DC.”
No reports of food poisoning injuries or illnesses have been reported in connection to the recall thus far.
As a North Charleston foodborne illness lawyer , I’m saddened to hear about this food recall linked to Salmonella. I urge consumers with this product to throw it out or return it to stores for a full refund. Salmonella is a potentially fatal foodborne illness that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and others with weakened immune systems.
If you believe you were sickened by foodborne bacteria, contact a doctor and have your case evaluated by a North Charleston personal injury lawyer .
