According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, more than two million car accidents involving animals occur throughout the country every year. Many of these collisions take place on two-lane roads during the late evenings and early mornings, causing drivers, passengers, and animals to suffer serious injuries. Unfortunately, the number of these types of accidents continues to increase.
Recently, Dartmoor Livestock Protection Society, a UK-based charity dedicated to protecting animals throughout the countryside, designed a paint that could be used to paint stripes on deer and other animals in the area to prevent these animals from being stuck by vehicles.
As of now, Dartmoor Livestock Protection Society is working closely with a paint manufacturer to create a paint that will stay on animal hair for at least four months and which has reflective qualities when light hits the paint directly. To test the product, Dartmoor Livestock Protection Society is painting stripes on privately owned ponies with green and blue formulas. When the concept is perfected, the organization hopes to expand the use of such paint on more animals.
Now, various areas within the United States are interested in using a similar product to protect wildlife and drivers throughout the country.
