Undoubtedly, most of America has heard about the massive egg recall that was announced last week. At that point in time, 228 million eggs were targeted in the recall, but now, just a week later that number has skyrocketed to 338 million eggs. The recall actually isn’t anything new though. Initially the recall was formally announced in May when the Center for Disease Control saw Salmonella cases spike from 50 a week to 200.
Since then most of the affected eggs have already been cooked and eaten. As long as the eggs are cooked thoroughly to a safe temperature, the bacteria will be killed thus making them safe to eat. The CDC was able to trace the outbreak to an Iowa farm, Wright County Egg. The egg products they produced were distributed to multiple states including California, Minnesota and Nebraska.
The contaminated eggs were branded under such names as Lucerne, Albertson, Ralph’s, Hillandale, Lund, and Farm Fresh among many others. According to this article however, the company has come under fire previously for hiring illegal immigrants and having poor working conditions, not to mention violating environmental laws.
