In a press release , Ludwig Dairy Products, in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Public Health, announced the recall of all of it’s brand name products after it was discovered that pasteurizing equipment in their facility was malfunctioning and potentially allowing raw milk to mix with pasteurized milk.
According to state inspectors, a system-controlled pump that is designed to cease production if the raw milk pressure exceeds that of pasteurized milk was bypassed and replaced with a pump that was not wired into the controls that would allow it to do so. Ludwig has now recalled the products that directly bare their name and were distributed throughout Illinois and several other states. This recall also affects a drinkable yogurt product sold under the Nuestro Queso brand name.
The company is working with public0health agencies to determine the extent of the issue and the Department of Health has issued a warning to the public to not consume the company’s products until their pasteurization issues have been fixed. Consumers are urged to properly dispose of these items.
Raw milk and products made from it can be contaminated with bacteria that can result in serious illness, hospitalization or death. Symptoms of raw milk-related illnesses include prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramping and vomiting. More rare and serious illnesses resulting from raw milk consumption may include kidney failure, paralysis and other chronic disorders.
