A device that could block cell phones from working in the drivers seat could affect all drivers in the near future.
John Fischer, CEO and president of Try Safety First Inc., claims he and his engineering team have developed a device that inhibits a cell phone to send text messages and e-mails while a car is in motion. It would only affect drivers, as the phones are disabled within one meter of the driver’s seat.
Fischer said he wants to stop distracted driving by changing the behavior of cell phones. Nearly 28 percent of traffic accidents occur when drivers talk or send text massages on their cell phone, according to a National Safety Council study.
Try Safety First is seeking a Congressional mandate to require manufactures to install its Owner Compliance Key in every phone they produce. Fischer said he has already spoken with legislators several times regarding a bill, which would require all cell phone manufacturers to install the device, according to news reports .
As a North Charleston car accident attorney, I am glad to see new technology being developed to prevent more car accidents related to distracted drivers using cell phones from occurring. However, I also think it’s important to teach drivers to be responsible by themselves, without using the technology.
