Swimming pool drains that are supposed to be certified for children’s safety may have been improperly certified, according to news reports. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, certified drain covers that were supposed to comply with the new laws may not be safe.
According to news reports , the CPSC said “some laboratories may not have correctly tested the “flow rating” of pool and spa drain covers, giving them improper certification.”
The agency is reviewing subpoenaed documents regarding the testing at three labs. It hopes to identify the unsafe covers by Memorial Day weekend.
A law put in place in 2008 “requires that all public pools and spas have covers to prevent entrapment,” according to news reports. “Residential pools manufactured in the past year also should have the new covers.”
As a Columbia personal injury lawyer , I urge pool owners to keep children away from drains, especially in shallow wading pools or those with single main drain systems, where they can be more powerful and dangerous. I hope the CPCS can determine the faulty drains as soon as possible to ensure no child injuries or deaths.
