Many South Carolina drivers are familiar with speed traps, having been on the receiving end of one or more speeding tickets after being caught breaking the law by a camera. Speed trap cameras are in use all over the country, and are also popular throughout Europe and other parts of the world. Knowing this and seizing an opportunity for innovation, Korean carmaker Hyundai has come up with a new system that can detect speed cameras and automatically slow a vehicle down. Available on the 2015 and 2016 Hyundai Genesis, this new system could dramatically reduce speeding tickets in the future.
According to Drive, and Australian car buying and selling website, the new technology is simply an integration of already existing structures. It works by combining the car’s automatic braking capabilities with a navigation system programmed with the locations of speed cameras. The system provides the driver with an audible warning approximately one half mile from the location of the camera. The driver can then respond by manually slowing the car, or if they don’t, the car can do it for them. Of course, this new technology only works with known speed cameras, and will not work with mobile cameras and highway patrol cars.
Currently, this technology is only available in Korea and is not planned for release in the U.S. Still, it is a fascinating piece of semi-autonomous technology that gives us another glimpse into the future of what our cars will soon be able to do.
