New Survey Says South Carolina is Home to USA’s Worst Drvers

USA Today reported on a new ranking of the worst drivers in the United States. South Carolina’s drivers were rated worst, tying with Montana. The ranking, calculated by a car insurance comparison website, scored states based on a variety of factors.

These factors included the following:

• The rate of car accident fatalities
• Number of deadly crashes stemming from failure to obey traffic directions
• Amount of deadly drunk driving accidents
• Speeding-related deaths
• Fatalities of pedestrian and bicyclists

When all of these statistics were tabulated together, this survey unfortunately revealed a rather startling fact: drivers in our very own state of South Carolina are tied with drivers in Montana as the worst drivers in the United States. Our state leads the nation in the number of deaths from car accidents, with 1.76 deaths per each 100 million miles driven in the state. Additionally, there were 863 deaths because of drunk driving and 136 pedestrian and cyclist deaths.

According to the article, the survey was intended to be a catalyst for a discussion about driving safety. It is a troubling reminder of just how dangerous South Carolina’s roads and highways can be. These statistics can also make it more expensive for drivers to obtain car insurance.
