Protect yourself and your family.
Don’t ignore vehicle recalls.
The largest car recall in American history is underway. Takata Corporation – a Japanese auto parts manufacturer – created airbags which sometimes fire off and spray the driver or passenger with metal shrapnel after a car accident. The effect on a person could be similar to being shot by a shotgun. Takata airbags are used in many cars, from Chryslers to Hondas to BMWs. Nearly 34 million vehicles are being recalled in the United States. One of them may be yours.
In addition to Takata’s massive recall, last year was also a record-setting year for total auto recalls in the United States. In 2014, an estimated 56 million vehicles were recalled nationwide.
With Takata’s recent recall expansion, our legal team at George Sink, P.A. Injury Lawyers wants to remind all South Carolinians about the importance of taking auto recalls seriously. Here are some tips to help you take action:
- Don’t ignore recall notices – If you own your car or truck, you should receive a recall notification by mail – automakers are legally required to send them. Notifications provide important information about the nature of a safety recall and the steps you can take to have your vehicle serviced, so don’t dismiss them as junk mail.
- Check yourself – If you are not sure that your vehicle has been recalled or have concerns you did not receive a recall notification, you can check into the matter yourself. Take a look at your vehicle manufacturer’s website, call your local dealer, or search online using the government VIN search tool provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
- Buying a car – Take recalls into consideration if you are looking to buy a vehicle. An estimated 37 million used cars and trucks have unfixed recalls, according to Carfax. You can protect yourself by searching the VIN of the vehicle you’re interested in. If a recall has not yet been fixed, you can even mention that when negotiating for a lower price.
Taking action after an auto recall can help protect you, your loved ones, and others on the road from suffering preventable harm. Having worked with victims whose lives were changed by car wrecks and defective products, our legal team cannot stress enough that fixing a recall issue could make the difference.
Unfortunately, potential hazards aren’t always recalled or fixed before people suffer harm. When this is the case, injured victims and families can assert their rights and pursue financial compensation for their damages by filing personal injury claims. At George Sink, P.A. Injury Lawyers our attorneys are available to help clients in their quest for full and fair compensation.
