One person was seriously injured in a car accident on Interstate 26 in Henderson County early Thursday morning, according to news reports.
The car accident occurred around 6 a.m. when a driver was traveling in the westbound lanes of I-26 at the 44 mile marker near Fletcher, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. It is unclear how the collision occurred, but the vehicle was reported flipped on its side with a person trapped underneath, according to news reports.
Emergency crews reported to the scene and were also to retrieve the victim. Crews waited nearly an hour for an emergency helicopter to arrive at the scene to transport the victim to Mission Hospital in Asheville, according to news reports.
The accident closed all lanes of I-26 westbound at the 44 mile marker for about an hour. By 7 a.m., one lane of I-26 westbound was still blocked, according to news reports.
It is unclear how many vehicles were involved in the accident and if there were any more victims in the crash. The condition of the person who was airlifted to the hospital is unknown.
