Horry County has the third highest number of highway fatalities in South Carolina, according to news reports .
Horry County was ranked among other counties in South Carolina in a break down by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The Highway Patrol examined car accidents county-by-county during the past four years.
“The number of highway fatalities in South Carolina since the beginning of the year have increased three percent since last year, with a total of 462 in 2011. Of those fatalities, Horry County accidents account for 28, tying Horry County for third in the total number of vehicle deaths with Lexington County. Charleston County came in first with 32 fatalities and Greenville County in second with 31 fatalities.”
While the number of fatal car accidents increased since 2010, the county saw a decrease in years past.
“The average of fatalities in 2008 and 2009 was 32. The total number of vehicle deaths in South Carolina between 2008 and 2009 was 544,” according to news reports.
