The men and women who are part of the South Carolina Highway Patrol unit risk their lives each day to protect the public and keep our highways safe. Every time they pull someone over for speeding or impaired driving, they risk getting hit by other drivers as they stand on the side of the road. Every time they approach a vehicle for a routine traffic stop, there’s the risk that the driver may have a weapon. But they do it none-the-less to keep us safe. In the past 80 years, nearly 50 troopers have been killed in the line of duty, according to this news report.
For the first time, South Carolina residents will have a chance to honor their memory in the South Carolina Fallen Troopers Memorial Run. The event will take place on October 5th at Charleston Southern University. Current State Troopers along with their friends and family will participate in the event and they are inviting the general public to join in too. Any money raised from the run will go towards building a memorial wall for the fallen troopers.
As a South Carolina personal injury lawyer , I can’t think of a better way to honor these courageous public service agents. I encourage other residents to take part in the event as well. Remember that if you’re ever in a car accident or find yourself in need of assistance on the side of the highway, these troopers are often the first to come to your aid.
