One person was injured and multiple people were evacuated from their homes after a vehicle struck a natural gas pipeline on U.S. 301 South.
The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. when a vehicle was driving south on U.S. 301. The driver lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway, struck a meter or valve of a Bamberg Public Works natural pipeline and sheered it off, according to news reports. The collision occurred near the Whitman Mold facility.
Gas was ventilating upward and dissipating due to weather conditions, requiring three houses to be evacuated, according to news reports .
It is unclear what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and crash. The driver was transported to Regional Medical Center with undisclosed injuries.
Smith said once the gas is shut off, people will most likely be able to return to their homes.
