In many ways, there’s nothing we can do to adequately repay those who fight for our freedom. Whether they are serving on home soil or abroad, American soldiers provide all US citizens with an invaluable service which simply can’t be overstated. For the average person, it’s hard to imagine the alarming sacrifices and risks a solider is forced to take on a daily basis.
That being said, there are a number of federally-funded programs which have been designed to assist both current and former American soldiers. These benefit programs each offer a little something different to our servicemen, and help ease the transition back into civilian life. Veterans’ Disability Compensation
If you’re a veteran that suffers from a service-related disability, there’s a chance you qualify for monthly compensation. Veterans that have experienced injury or diseases while on active duty may actually receive over $3,100 in benefits on a regular basis. This funding can also be paid to certain vets that don’t currently qualify for VA health care. Keep in mind, these benefits are tax-free, and may also be administered to soldiers whose pre-existing conditions worsened while serving in the military.
The Veterans’ Pension Program
Wartime veterans that currently receive limited income may actually qualify for a Veterans Disability Pension. Additionally, former soldiers aged 65 and over might qualify for a separate Veterans Pension for the elderly. Though a large number of past soldiers aren’t aware of these pension plans, it’s imperative they explore all the compensation opportunities offered by the government.
Veterans may qualify for this pension program if they were discharged from service under honorable conditions and served at least 90 days of active duty. It’s also important to note that 1 of these days must have been served during a period of official wartime. In addition to the previous factors, pension recipients must also be permanently disabled, and receive a yearly family income which falls below a federally-set amount.
Veterans’ Health Care
The Department of Veterans Affairs is always required to provide eligible veterans with “needed” hospital care and outpatient services. In this context, “needed” is defined as any care or service which will help to promote, preserve or restore the health of a past military member. Under this health care plan, veterans stand to gain advanced treatment, procedures, supplies, and medical services. GI Bill Educational Benefits
The GI Bill provides active military members with an array of separate education benefits. In some cases, these benefits are additionally offered to select Reserve and National Guard servicemen. Under the GI Bill, service members and eligible veterans should receive the proper funding to cover their education and training costs. The GI Bill offers a number of programs which are each administered differently depending on a soldier’s eligibility and duty status.
