Avoid Deer on the Road

As a North Charleston personal injury lawyer , I would like to take the time to warn drivers that the autumn months of September, October and November are when 60% of car accidents involving deer or other wildlife take place.  According to Robert McCullough from the Department of Natural Resources, this time is their breeding season. In this news report, he said, “This is when deer go out into rut and both male and females are moving a lot.”

Many accidents involving deer take place in the early morning or late evening hours, often around dawn and dusk, because that’s when they are on the move to feed.  Unfortunately, it also happens to be the time when many drivers are commuting to and from work.  While you can’t prevent deer from crossing the highway, you can remain prepared and alert while driving.  Drivers should be in the habit of staying focused while driving regardless, but even more so when you know that deer are in the area and warning signs are posted.

As you’re driving, you should scan the side of the highway to see if deer are lingering on the side of the road.  They are very unpredictable animals, so they may jump into the road without any warning.  If you see any deer in the area, slow your speed, make sure you are buckled up and proceed with caution.
