Reactions are mixed among shoppers and retailers in Downtown Lexington as Town Hall intends to begin work on a long-term plan to make stretches of Lake Drive and Church Street one-way streets. Common in big cities like Charleston, one-way streets may improve traffic flow in heavily congested areas, but many are worried that the change will be confusing for motorists and are anticipating a “massive headache.”
Despite the mixed reactions, the $1.9 million plan is expected to double traffic capacity on each street, improving traffic flow and increasing mobility. According to tallies by state transportation officials, average daily traffic is 17,000 vehicles on Main Street, 3,500 on Church Street, and 12,500 on Lake Drive.
Lexington has already tried adding medians and curbs to make motorists slow down in the center of the city at the intersection of three major commuter routes. In December 2015 we also saw the addition of new traffic signals to ease traffic. An entire network of three dozen new signals is expected to be installed by 2017.
