Magnetic pieces in toys made headlines in the news over the last few years when it was discovered just how drastic the damage can be if the pieces are ingested. When the magnetic fragments make it into your digestive system, they can attract one another and perforate your stomach, bowels or esophagus in the process. If the contents of your intestines then leak out into your body, it can lead to sepsis which can be a fatal personal injury.
The company Lakeshore Learning Materials based out of Carson, CA recently issued a voluntary recall for their numerous Magnetic Maze Board products. The games utilize a magnetic wand which moves pieces across a game board. However, these pieces become exposed and can be swallowed by young children, according to this CPSC press release. So far, the company has received 10 complaints from consumers that experienced detached magnets and separated wands. As a South Carolina personal injury lawyer, I was relieved to hear that no one was injured by this defective product.
The company is offering free replacements to consumers and they are urging owners to cease using the product immediately.
