One of Myrtle Beach’s most dangerous intersections will be getting a makeover, all in the purpose of safety. The intersection at Coalition Drive and Highway 707 in Horry County ranks among the highest when it comes to car accident rates. Over the last two years, 20 accidents have been reported. However, a business owner at the corner of the intersection believes that many more accidents occur but may go unreported.
In this news report , Doug Gardner talks about how often he sees accidents take place. “On an average, at least once a week. But I have seen as many as three or four. I’ve seen as many as two a day.” Currently, there is a stop sign at the intersection but since it’s on a major highway, drivers don’t pay it much heed. “It’s like the stop sign doesn’t exist. It’s like it’s not even there. [Drivers] just come on out,” Gardner claims.
Drivers also have a bad habit of cutting through business parking lots in order to avoid traffic at the stop sign and this alone creates a hazard for potential pedestrian accidents. Plans for the stop light are still in the engineering stage as the city tries to find the right place to put the pole for the light. However, the city council aims to have it up and running by mid-December. As a personal injury lawyer in South Carolina , I am optimistic that this traffic light will decrease accident rates at this notorious intersection.
