Drivers who are familiar with Interstate 26 know it’s dangerous, but commuters are pondering, is it the road or the drivers that are the problem?
Two accidents occurred on I-26 on Tuesday morning, highlighting the freeway’s dangers. The first incident occurred when a 44-year-old Summerville man ran off the road and hit a tree. The second incident involved five vehicles, including a dump truck that side-swiped several other vehicles when it ran off the road and hit a tree.
Some commuters are blaming the numerous accidents on driver error, including distracted driving. Texting, talking on cell phones and speeding are all contributing factors into accidents, the highway patrol said to news reports.
Whatever the cause, the scene is getting worse. “Federal and state records show more than 325 deaths have occurred along that stretch of I-26 in the past decade,” according to news reports. Last year, there were 286 accidents.
Yesterday, I reported about a $1.5 million Department of Transportation grant given to the highway patrol to allow troopers to work overtime on dangerous roads.
As a North Charleston personal injury lawyer, I’m urge drivers to always practice safe driving whether there are extra patrols out or not.
