It’s no surprise that recall information rarely reaches the people who need it most. Often times, unless you fill out the little card to register your product and then send it in to the manufacturer, there’s no way for the company to know that you ever purchased their product that has been found to be defective. Sure, the CPSC has the information on their website but hardly any of us have time to scour their site on a regular basis. Even if that information does reach you, only 10-30 percent of consumers actually take action in response to the news.
Children are particularly vulnerable to personal injury since their immune system is susceptible to things like e. coli or salmonella poisoning from tainted foods. Plus, toys are a common target of product recalls. So naturally, the Consumers Union is turning to schools in an effort to spread the recall word to parents. They’ve developed a new website called “ClickCheckandProtect.org” that combines news from the FDA, USDA, FTC, and CDC all in one place.
According to this press release , the organization claims, “We’ve worked together with the National Parent Teacher Association and the National School Boards Association to form this coalition and developed innovative methods for getting safety information directly to parents through their children’s schools.” The coalition urges schools to subscribe to the site and to include pertinent information within their newsletters.
