For three years in a row, AAA Carolinas has named Charleston County the most dangerous county in South Carolina for auto accidents . There were more than 12,000 collisions in Charleston county in 2012; that’s an equivalent of 342 crashes for every 100 million miles traveled, 55% higher than the South Carolina state average.
Alternatively, Jasper County has been named one of the safest driving counties in South Carolina, with only 90 crashes per 100 million miles. Jasper County has been in AAA’s top four safest counties for the past five years!
While you are more likely to be in a car accident in Charleston County, the chances of you being killed in a car accident are much higher in rural counties like Williamsburg, Allendale, Oconee, Saluda, and Laurens – the top 5 deadliest counties according to AAA. These counties had a total of 65 fatal car wrecks in 2012 – 8% of all fatal crashes in South Carolina last year.
Greenville, Horry, and Richland counties are just behind Charleston in the running for most dangerous county for car wrecks, and have been for several years.
