Future technology may help prevent cars from crashing into each other by making them “talk” to each other. According to news reports, Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and Volkswagen AG are working together to create technology to enable vehicle-to-vehicle communication.
“If every car had it, it would be like another pair of eyes,” said Mike Shulman, technical research leader at Ford’s active safety research and advanced engineering team. “You wouldn’t know it was there unless you need it.”
The car talk would actually be a wireless radar message between the vehicles, providing information of their location, 10 times every second. The collision warning would work within a 360-degree detection range from any direction and on all sides of the vehicle, according to news reports. This technology could be useful in the event of drivers on path to collide with another at a four-way intersection or when a car several vehicles ahead slams on the brakes.
As a North Charleston car accident attorney, , it will be interesting to see how this technology evolves to help make drivers safer and avoid car accidents. However technology evolves, however, it’s important to always practice safe driving habits.
