Only a Blood Alcohol Content of .00 is safe. A “safe” BAC does not exist, even though the legal BAC is .08, according to a new study.
The study, released by demographers at the University of California, says that drivers who consume a single drink before getting behind the wheel are more likely to get into crashes than sober drivers. The researchers said that driving after even drinking a small taste of alcohol could result in injury or potentially death.
“Buzzed” driving has been a major problem among drivers. The severity of the crash they were involved in is also higher than those involving sober drivers. The study showcases drivers between 1994 and 2008.
The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) was used because those reports track every fatal crash and includes the drivers’ BAC.
As a Charleston car accident attorney , I’m glad to hear that this is being researched. I urge drivers to never drink and drive as it poses harm to the driver as well as everyone around them. I always urge drivers to use a designated driver, hire a cab, or use public transportation if drinking.
