Ever wondered what a human would have to look like to survive a car crash? A trauma surgeon, an artist, and a crash expert teamed up to find out! Esquire recently released pictures of Graham, a bizarre specimen designed to be the ultimate “car crash-proof human.” Graham is the face of the Australian Transport Accident Commission’s new Toward Zero road-safety campaign, which seeks to create a future free of deaths and serious injuries on the road.
Human bodies aren’t equipped to handle the forces that are common in auto collision scenarios. Knowing this, the team created Graham with the goal of survival in mind. Graham has a much larger skull intended to absorb forces and fracture upon impact to better protect the brain. He has a fatty, concave face that is less likely to be injured and no neck at all, which reduces the potential for back and spinal cord injuries. His ribs extend up high around the face and also have a layer of external air sacs to prevent internal injury. His entire frame is covered by much thicker skin than the average human in order to prevent lacerations.
Graham’s creators didn’t stop there. In addition to considering what could happen to him as a driver or passenger in a car, they also thought about how he would survive a collision with a car as a pedestrian. Graham’s ankles were constructed with an extra joint to increase his mobility in case he needs to spring out of the way of an oncoming car. His knees are also incredibly flexible in case of an impact.
The forces present in typical car accident scenarios are extreme. In fact, according to trauma surgeon Christian Kenfield, one of the collaborators in this project, not even the strongest person could hold themselves from going forward in a car accident. Even at low speeds, car accidents can cause serious injury, including whiplash, back injuries, spinal cord injuries, and broken bones. This project is a fascinating (albeit slightly terrifying) examination of how serious car accidents can be and how much damage they can cause to the human body.
