The Zipper, the Sizzler and the Tilt-A-Whirl are fun rides at fairs, but are they safe?
According to news reports , there is no federal oversight over how fair rides and rentals are set up, maintained and operated.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission regulates how traveling amusement rides are manufactured, but oversight is left to the states, according to news reports.
“It’s like a crazy quilt,” said James Barber, spokesman for the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials, to news reports.. “There are marked differences between states.”
A new study by non profit Saferparks showed that 24 states, including California and New York, had comprehensive government inspection and accident investigation programs, according to news reports.
“Eleven states, including Oregon and Washington, had minimum inspection and insurance requirements and leave oversight to the private sector. Nine states had partial oversight. And six states – Alabama, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming – had no amusement ride regulations at all.”
