IPhone apps can do just about anything these days, but one thing the company said it will prevent them to do is alert drunken drivers about police checkpoints.
Apple Inc. said it will reject iPhone applications that try to protect drunken drivers, according to news reports . The move reportedly comes after pressure from four U.S. senators.
“Apple updated its app developer guidelines Wednesday to exclude such apps. On Thursday, some DUI apps were still available in the App Store, but Apple usually gives developers a chance to update their apps so they can conform to the new guidelines before booting them,” according to news reports.
The warning apps alerted drivers about police checkpoints, speed traps, red-light cameras and other driving violations.
Senators Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), Frank R. Lautenberg (D-N.J.), and Tom Udall (D-N.M.) were involved in the fight against the apps.
As a Columbia car accident attorney , I think it’s interesting how some drivers are using technology to avoid police officers and possible citations. I urge drivers to always practice safe driving habits whether there are officers around or not.
