There are almost 49,000 homeless veterans in the United States[1]. Allowing our bravest citizens to fight for our country and then go homeless is shameful. One state, Virginia, has finally declared victory against the scourge of homelessness amongst our veterans by giving every single veteran shelter. Not only has Virginia ended veteran homelessness now, they have committed to eliminating it for the future.
This incredible accomplishment means two things:
- All homeless veterans in Virginia have been provided with shelter, and
- The state has the resources in place to deal with veteran homelessness issues for three months into the future.
While Connecticut came close to being the first state to end veteran homelessness, Virginia had the edge when it came down to making the change sustainable.
Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe proudly made the announcement about the victory this past Veteran’s Day. In a state with the seventh highest veteran population in the country, Virginia has succeeded in providing permanent housing for more than 1,400 homeless veterans. This is just one long-overdue way that the United States is saying “thank you” for the service and sacrifices made by veterans for their country. With continued efforts, we hope that other U.S. states can soon follow in Virginia’s footsteps and end veteran homelessness once and for all.
Proudly Advocating for Veterans’ Rights
Approximately 40 percent of homeless men are veterans[2]. On any given night, there are 200,000 veterans spending the night on the streets, and more than 400,000 veterans will experience homelessness during the course of a year[3]. Many of these former service members suffer from mental disabilities and conditions like PTSD. As a nation, we should be ashamed of these statistics. No one who has sacrificed in service of their country should have to suffer this indignity.
The team at George Sink, P.A. Injury Lawyers has great respect for veterans for their brave and loyal service to our country. No veteran should have to face homelessness because they could not obtain benefits – that is why we advocate on their behalf for the veterans disability/ TDIU benefits they deserve. If you are a veteran struggling to obtain benefits, we encourage you to get in touch with a Veterans Disability lawyer today. Our firm is veteran-owned, so you can trust that your best interests are our number one priority.
