Some common FAQs on hip replacement surgery:

1.       What is hip replacement surgery?

Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a diseased or damaged hip joint is removed and replaced with an artificial hip implant. The implant is has a steel stem and ball, which is attached to the thigh bone and socket and fitted into the pelvis.

2.       How long will I be hospitalized?

Hip replacement surgery is a major operation requiring general anesthesia, an 8-10 inch incision and a long recovery period. However, most patients will be able to go home after a four to six day hospital stay.

3.       When will the surgical staples be removed?

Surgical staples are used to close the 8-10 inch incision after surgery. The staples normal remain in place for 10 to 14 days. They will either be removed at a rehab facility or surgeon’s office.

4.       How long is the recovery period?

After the hospital stay, most patients require physical therapy for six months to a year. Patients will be able to resume normal daily activity, but will need to avoid twisting, bending, weight bearing activities and impact sports.

5.       How long will the implant last?

Most implants for first-time patients will last 15 to 25 years. As more implants are required, the lifespan decreases. If your device lasted much less than expected, you may be qualified for damages , especially if you had a DePuy ASR hip implant.
