Hydroxycut Recalled Due to Risk of Serious Liver Damage

Hydroxycut products have been linked to serious liver problems and other side effects. A popular line of weight loss supplements, designed to help burn fat, Hydroxycut products were recalled by the manufacturer in May, 2009 after the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers to stop taking the supplements immediately. At least one death has been involved with Hydroxycut.

Because problems were reported as far back as seven years ago, our firm believes the manufacturer (lovate Health Sciences, Inc., and MuscleTech) was negligent in warning consumers of the potential risks of using their products. Hydroxycut is marketed as a fat burner, an energy enhancer, a low-carb diet aid, and for it’s water loss properties. The various Hydroxycut products contain herbal extracts, chemicals, and even some metals. If you or someone you know suffered liver damage, or any other harmful side effects from using Hydroxycut, please call us today for a free case evaluation.

Liver Damage Linked to Hydroxycut

Hydroxycut has been recalled as a result of the FDA receiving 23 reports of liver problems at the time of the recall. One fatality and multiple liver problems resulting in the need for a liver transplant have also been reported. The victims reporting liver damage were between 21 and 51 years of age and had no other cause for liver disease. In fact, no other predisposition for liver injury was reported for a majority of the victims of the harmful side effects of Hydroxycut. In some cases, liver function showed signs of recovery after discontinuing use of Hydroxycut products.  All the patients reporting liver injury were using the Hydroxycut products according to the dosage recommended by the product’s label.

Symptoms of Liver Damage or Liver Injury

Liver Damage or Liver Injury can be characterized by jaundice (yellowing of the skin, or the whites of the eyes), brown urine, nausea, vomiting, excessive fatigue, weakness, light-colored stools, loss of appetite, itching, and stomach or abdominal pain. These symptoms in Hydroxycut users both while taking the supplements and up to several months after discontinuing use. The FDA warns consumers to consult a physician if they are experiencing any symptoms, liver damage or otherwise, that could be associated with Hydroxycut products.

Other Side Effects of Hydroxycut

Harmful side effects of Hydroxycut are not limited to liver damage, as some users have reported having seizures. Further, rhabdomyolysis (a type of muscle damage) has been reported as well. Rhabdomyolysis can lead to other serious problems. Hydroxycut has also been associated with cardiovascular problems, ranging from heart attack to irregular heart beat.
