According to news agencies, recent reports from the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) state that, due to rising fatality auto accidents across the state over the last several years, the patrol plans to increase traffic enforcement over the weekend.
Sgt. Chris Shelton of the SCHP said that, as of the end of October, 691 road-related deaths had occurred this year in South Carolina. This number is 18 more than the previous year and Sgt. Shelton points to speeding as the primary cause of the increase.
Shelton said, “Law enforcement will crack down on speeders during Thanksgiving weekend. To avoid a ticket or collision, buckle up and slow down.”
Compared to the 9 deaths that happened in 2009 and 15 that occurred in 2008 over the holiday weekend, 2010 only saw three deaths resulting from auto accidents.
Lance Cpl. Billy Elder stated that the main reasons for fatal auto accidents in South Carolina remain to be speeding, refusal to wear a seatbelt and driving under the influence of either alcohol or another controlled substance. According to Elder, individuals who choose not to wear a seatbelt are 7 times more at risk of dying in a crash.
As a Greenville car accident lawyer, I’ve seen the results of speeding, driving under the influence and not wearing a seatbelt. I urge all drivers to always observe the rules of the road and practice safe driving habits. If you’ve been injured in an accident that you believe was the result of another driver’s negligence, contact a car accident lawyer in your town.
