Local Pastor Honored for Saving Life

By Personal Injury Lawyer on December 6, 2011

A local pastor who saved a man from a burning vehicle was honored by South Carolina Highway Patrol. “Highway patrol came to the church on Sunday and presented me with an award. They call it the hero award,” says pastor Johnny Byrd. “I always give God the credit. He’s the one that put me there.” The collision happened September 17th when the pastor heard about the crash from his daughter and immediately drove to the scene of the wreck. He found the man unconscious inside the vehicle. As the car began to catch fire, he got another passerby to help him extract the victim from inside the vehicle. They pulled the victim through the sunroof. “We began to pull and then the car exploded. And when it did, it blew us all back. I wouldn’t let go and it blew him out,” Byrd said. Paramedics arrived at the scene to treat the accident victim. Over half of his body had been burned, according to news reports, but thankfully he survived the wreck.

SC Fatalities Rise Over Holidays as More Drivers Fill Road

By Personal Injury Lawyer on November 23, 2011

According to news agencies, recent reports from the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) state that, due to rising fatality auto accidents across the state over the last several years, the patrol plans to increase traffic enforcement over the weekend.

Sgt. Chris Shelton of the SCHP said that, as of the end of October, 691 road-related deaths had occurred this year in South Carolina. This number is 18 more than the previous year and Sgt. Shelton points to speeding as the primary cause of the increase.

Shelton said, “Law enforcement will crack down on speeders during Thanksgiving weekend. To avoid a ticket or collision, buckle up and slow down.”

Compared to the 9 deaths that happened in 2009 and 15 that occurred in 2008 over the holiday weekend, 2010 only saw three deaths resulting from auto accidents.

Lance Cpl. Billy Elder stated that the main reasons for fatal auto accidents in South Carolina remain to be speeding, refusal to wear a seatbelt and driving under the influence of either alcohol or another controlled substance. According to Elder, individuals who choose not to wear a seatbelt are 7 times more at risk of dying in a crash.

As a Greenville car accident lawyer, I’ve seen the results of speeding, driving under the influence and not wearing a seatbelt. I urge all drivers to always observe the rules of the road and practice safe driving habits. If you’ve been injured in an accident that you believe was the result of another driver’s negligence, contact a car accident lawyer in your town.

SC Troopers Increase Presence Over Holiday

By Personal Injury Lawyer on November 23, 2011

According to news reports, South Carolina State Troopers are increasing their presence across the state in order to make drivers more aware of their behavior and prevent avoidable accidents over Thanksgiving.

Troopers reported that last year there were only three fatal auto accidents over the Thanksgiving weekend in South Carolina, which is the fewest number of deaths on the road since 1963 in the state. Troopers agree that that number is low, but it’s still three too many. Which is why troopers have saturated Interstate 77 with speed checks, with Chester County Trooper ticketing 44 speeders on Wednesday alone. In the same day, a license checkpoint on Highway 9 handed out 24 tickets for violations.

Trooper Billy Elder stated, “We are out for a zero fatality goal to be met this weekend. We don’t want to see anyone lose their life this holiday season. I don’t see anyone speeding; everyone is following the rules and it seems like everyone is looking out for one another.”

Troopers are also planning a great number of DUI checkpoints over the weekend to help prevent drinking and driving.

As a Charleston car accident lawyer, I implore everyone to always follow the rules of the road and practice safe driving habits. If you’ve been injured in an accident that you believe was the direct result of another driver’s negligent actions, speak with an experienced car accident lawyer in your area.
