The South Carolina Highway Patrol, Greenville Sheriff’s Office and Greenville Police Department joined to urge motorists to be aware of pedestrians. 105 pedestrian fatalities have been recorded so far this year, ten of which happened in Greenville County. This is a rise compared to the 84 during the same time last year. The increase in pedestrian fatalities have caused police to create SEE (Stop, Educate and Enforce), according to news reports.
“In order to prevent these kinds of tragedies we’re all going to have to learn our responsibilities,” explains Lt. Dean Elliott of the Greenville Police Dept. “We all grew up to often with the misunderstanding that pedestrians always have the right of way regardless of where they are in the roadway. That’s simply not the case. A well educated pedestrian about his responsibilities in that roadway will help us to bring down those figures.”

A local pastor who saved a man from a burning vehicle was honored by South Carolina Highway Patrol. “Highway patrol came to the church on Sunday and presented me with an award. They call it the hero award,” says pastor Johnny Byrd. “I always give God the credit.
