In a news release Saturday, Rite Aid announced, in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the voluntary recall of Christmas cookies due to the possible presence of the microorganism Bacillus cereus.
Subject to recall are about 85,000 12-ounce tins of butter cookies distributed by the retailer under the Rich Fields brand. The cookie tins feature either Christmas designs or a decorative castle and have the UPC codes 01249596519 and 88411804619. Bacillus cereus infection can lead to diarrhea, nausea and/or vomiting. More serious heath consequences are unlikely. The recall came about after quality testing was conducted on the affected product due to an uncharacteristic odor.
Customers who have purchased the recalled cookies should not eat the baked goods. The cookies can be returned to any Rite Aid store for a full refund. The company is contacting consumers who purchased the cookies using their wellness+ card to notify those customers of the recall.
While we don't handle this type of case, we feel that it's important to educate the community that there has been a recall to help protect your safety. If you have been injured by any defective item, you may want to search for a lawyer who handles these types of cases.
