In an update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the federal health agency announced that to date, 100 people had been infected with Listeria from tainted cantaloupes from Colorado’s Jensen Farms and that an additional 18 individuals have died from the infection, report news sources.
The CDC is calling the rash of Listeria infections the deadliest food borne illness outbreak in the last decade. Illnesses began around July 31, 2011.
Listeria infection can lead to listeriosis, which is uncommon; however, it is a serious, and in some cases fatal, illness, especially in elderly or frail people, children, and people with compromised immune systems. Symptoms include fever, headache, stiffness, abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea. Among pregnant women, Listeria infection can lead to stillbirths and miscarriages.
