Investigators are still looking for answers in the 1-year-old case of a detached utility trailer that caused a fatal crash in Anderson County killing the parents of two young children, report news sources.
The crash occurred on Interstate 85 at approximately 8:30 p.m., September 18 on southbound I-85 near mile marker 24. The homemade trailer was being towed by a truck when it detached and came to rest in the middle of the highway. The driver of sport utility vehicle pulled over to call 911, notifying authorities of the stalled trailer.
Soon after, a minivan carrying a Spartanburg couple and their two daughters, then ages 3 and 6, struck the struck the trailer and veered into the path of a big rig traveling in the right lane. The collision with the tractor-trailer sent the minivan into the parked SUV. The couple inside the minivan died at the scene. The two daughters are now living with family in Georgia.
Investigators are stymied in the crash investigation because the owner of the trailer has not stepped forward, and because the trailer was unlicensed, leaving authorities no way of tracking the owner down. According to the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, state law does not require utility trailers weighing less than 2,500 pounds to be licensed or registered.
As a Spartanburg car accident lawyer, motorist safety is something that I am very aware of, and my heartfelt condolences go out to the little girls and the couple’s family, friends and loved ones. Despite my experience as a Spartanburg personal injury attorney, I cannot begin to imagine how this event has impacted these two children. I hope that they are receiving all of the love and support they deserve.
